Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has long been captivated by the grace and spirit of horses. This lifelong passion has not only shaped his personal pursuits but also transformed the global landscape of horse racing.
His fascination began in childhood, riding bareback along the sands of Jumeirah Beach, where he developed a deep bond with these majestic animals. This early connection laid the foundation for a vision that would see Dubai emerge as a central hub in the world of equestrian sports.
In 1994, Sheikh Mohammed established Godolphin, now recognized as the world’s largest and most international racing team. Complementing this is Darley, his global breeding operation with facilities across six countries, including the UK, USA, Ireland, and Australia. These enterprises have produced numerous champions and have been instrumental in elevating the standards of thoroughbred racing worldwide.
Beyond breeding and racing, Sheikh Mohammed’s commitment to the sport is evident in his establishment of the Dubai World Cup in 1996. Held at the state-of-the-art Meydan Racecourse, this event has become one of the most prestigious in the horse racing calendar.
Sheikh Mohammed often expresses his love for horses through poetry, describing them as symbols of freedom and honor—an enduring reflection of Arab heritage and identity.
