What Do Horses Eat? A Guide to Equine Nutrition

Horses are herbivores with a digestive system designed for grazing throughout the day. Their diet relies heavily on forage—grass and hay—which provides the fiber necessary for healthy digestion and prevents issues like colic. High-quality hay such as alfalfa or timothy supports gut health, while fresh pasture lets horses graze naturally for hours.

For horses needing more energy—like those in training, young, or pregnant—grains and commercial concentrates offer added nutrients. These mixes often include oats, corn, and essential vitamins and minerals, but should be fed in moderation to avoid digestive problems.

Supplements can help balance nutritional gaps, especially when forage lacks elements like selenium. In warmer months or after exercise, electrolytes help replace lost minerals.

Horses also enjoy the occasional treat, such as apples, carrots, or peppermints, though these should be limited. Clean, fresh water is essential at all times.

Consistency in feeding schedules is key, as sudden changes can upset their stomach. A well-balanced diet tailored to a horse’s age, activity level, and health status is vital for its well-being. With proper care and attention, a horse’s nutrition supports energy, performance, and long-term vitality
