Max Stevens: Unsung Polo Star

For Max Stevens, winning the National President’s Cup at the National Polo Center (NPC) in Wellington, Florida, was not just a tournament victory—it was the culmination of years of commitment at the 8-goal level. “Most of the tournament polo I’ve played has been at the 8-goal level, so for me winning the National President’s Cup was like winning the Open,” said Stevens, after leading Organic Matters Inc. to a 7-6 win over Fross & Fross that went down to the wire.

The match unfolded just hours before the U.S. Open Polo Championship final, setting the stage for a historic father-son showdown between Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso. Sharing the day with the most prestigious tournament in the country underscored the USPA’s commitment to showcasing polo at all levels. By scheduling the President’s Cup final at NPC on the same day as the U.S. Open, the Association spotlighted a tournament with over 50 years of history—one that continues to serve as a cornerstone for mid-level competition in the United States.

Stevens, who was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, was introduced to the sport through his father and began playing seriously at 17 under the guidance of Eddy Martinez. Today, he not only plays but also leads the team named after his company, Organic Matters Inc., a Florida-based agricultural recycling firm. Balancing business with polo, he continues investing in the 8-goal circuit, which he sees as a crucial tier in developing American players and horses.
